The Art of Enamel: Glass, Fire & Extraordinary Craftsmanship

Brilliant turquoise, deep cobalt blue, translucent green, fiery red, soft ivory—the colors can be almost impossibly vivid. Unlike a gemstone, however, enamel is not a mineral. It is glass, ground into a fine powder and fused to metal at high temperatures.

The result is a material that sits somewhere between painting, glassmaking, and metalwork.

And creating it requires all three skills.

What Exactly Is Enamel?

At its simplest, enamel is finely powdered glass that is fused to a metal surface using heat.

The enamel powder is applied to the metal and then fired in a kiln. As the temperature rises, the glass melts and bonds to the surface. When it cools, it becomes a hard, glossy layer of colored glass.

That sounds simple.

It isn't.

The enameller has to control the thickness of the enamel, the firing temperature, the timing, the cleanliness of the surface, and the behavior of each individual color. Different colors can behave differently during firing, and enamel can crack, bubble, discolor, or separate from the metal if something goes wrong.

And unlike painting, there is no easy way to simply wipe away a mistake.

Much of the work happens in the kiln, where the artist has limited control over what happens once the door is closed.

An Ancient Craft

Enameling is an extraordinarily old technique.

Evidence of early enamel work dates back thousands of years, and the craft was practiced in the ancient Mediterranean world before becoming an important decorative technique in Byzantine and medieval Europe. Enameling was also developed and practiced extensively across Asia and the Middle East.

During the Middle Ages, some of Europe's finest enamel work was produced in centers such as Limoges, France.

Medieval enamellers used enamel to decorate reliquaries, crosses, vessels, plaques, and other religious objects. One particularly important technique was champlevé, in which recesses were cut into a metal surface and filled with powdered enamel before firing.

Over the centuries, enameling became increasingly sophisticated, eventually finding its way into snuffboxes, watch cases, portrait miniatures, and jewelry.

The Many Faces of Enamel

One of the fascinating things about enamel is that there isn't just one way to use it.

Different techniques create completely different effects.

Champlevé

In champlevé, small recesses are carved, cast, or etched into the metal. These compartments are filled with enamel and fired, leaving the metal itself as part of the design.

It is particularly associated with medieval European metalwork and can create bold areas of brilliant color.

Cloisonné

Cloisonné works almost in reverse.

Instead of carving into the metal, the enameller creates tiny compartments on its surface using thin metal wires or strips. Each compartment is then filled with enamel.

The wires remain visible, creating the characteristic outlines between the colors.

The technique has ancient roots and became especially important in Byzantine, Asian, Russian, and later European decorative arts.

Plique-à-Jour

Perhaps the most magical—and difficult—is plique-à-jour.

The name roughly translates to "letting in daylight."

Unlike ordinary enamel, plique-à-jour has no permanent metal backing beneath the colored glass. The enamel is suspended within a framework of metal cells, allowing light to pass through it like miniature stained glass.

Because there is no solid backing to support the enamel, the technique is notoriously difficult.

When it works, however, the effect is extraordinary.

The color seems to glow from within.

Painted Enamel

Enamel can also be used almost like paint.

In painted enamel, the artist builds up an image using layers of finely ground colored glass. Each layer is fired separately.

This technique became particularly important for enamel portrait miniatures during the eighteenth century.

Unlike watercolor on ivory, enamel portraits are remarkably durable. The basic process used to create an enamel portrait miniature involves applying finely ground colored glass to a thin metal sheet and firing it layer by layer.

The artist is essentially painting with glass.

Fabergé and the Art of Enamel

No discussion of enamel in jewelry would be complete without mentioning Fabergé.

The House of Fabergé, founded in St. Petersburg by Peter Carl Fabergé, became famous for its extraordinary use of enamel during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fabergé's workshops employed highly skilled artisans who experimented with an astonishing range of colors and finishes, particularly translucent and opaque guilloché enamels.

Guilloché enamel was created by applying translucent enamel over an intricately engraved metal surface. The engraving created patterns beneath the transparent color, producing a shimmering effect that changed as the object moved in the light.

Fabergé used this technique extensively on cigarette cases, boxes, picture frames, jewelry, and the famous Imperial Easter Eggs.

The famous eggs are perhaps the best-known examples, but Fabergé's smaller objects can be even more revealing of the extraordinary skill involved. A tiny enamel box or pendant could require the same painstaking attention to surface preparation, engraving, enamel application, and firing as a much larger object.

Fabergé also became celebrated for colors that collectors still associate with the house, including translucent pinks, greens, blues, and the famously difficult "bowenite" and opalescent enamel effects.

The firm's enamel work demonstrates something important about the material: enamel does not have to imitate a gemstone.

It can be valuable because of the skill required to make the enamel itself beautiful.

Why Is Fine Enamel So Expensive?

This is where enamel jewelry can be misunderstood.

At first glance, enamel might seem inexpensive. After all, the material is essentially glass.

But the value isn't in the raw material.

It is in the craftsmanship.

A highly skilled enameller may spend many hours preparing a piece, applying extremely thin layers of enamel, firing it repeatedly, inspecting the result, grinding and polishing the surface, and correcting imperfections.

A single piece may pass through the kiln many times.

And every firing carries risk.

Too much heat can damage the enamel or the metal beneath it. Too little heat may leave the enamel improperly fused. Tiny particles of dust can become permanently trapped in the surface. Different colors may behave differently during firing.

The finished surface may therefore represent dozens of decisions—and a great deal of patience.

The Enameller's Greatest Enemy: The Kiln

Perhaps the most intimidating part of the process is that the artist can't completely control the outcome.

Once a piece enters the kiln, the enamel changes.

Colors that appear dull as powder can become brilliant after firing. Layers can soften and fuse. Tiny imperfections can become obvious. A piece that looked perfect before firing can emerge cracked or discolored.

This is why experienced enamellers develop an almost intuitive understanding of their materials.

They learn how a particular enamel behaves.

They learn how thick a layer should be.

They learn how the metal will react.

And, eventually, they learn how to predict what will happen when the kiln door closes.

Enamel in the Victorian and Art Nouveau Eras

Enamel experienced a particularly important revival during the nineteenth century.

Jewelry designers became fascinated with its ability to create brilliant color without relying entirely on gemstones.

During the Art Nouveau period, enamel became especially important.

Designers such as René Lalique used enamel alongside materials such as horn, glass, and semiprecious stones, moving away from the traditional idea that a fine jewel had to be dominated by diamonds and other precious gems.

Plique-à-jour was particularly well suited to Art Nouveau's fascination with insects, flowers, wings, leaves, and flowing organic forms.

A dragonfly's wing could become translucent blue enamel.

A flower petal could glow like stained glass.

A peacock could be rendered in layers of shimmering green and turquoise.

The technique allowed jewelers to create effects that gemstones alone could never achieve.

The Arts and Crafts Revival

Enamel also became important to the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain around the turn of the twentieth century.

Artists such as Edith Dawson, Phoebe Anna Traquair, and Arthur and Georgie Gaskin embraced enamel as a way of creating intensely personal, handmade objects.

The British revival of enameling between approximately 1880 and 1920 was closely connected with the Arts and Crafts movement's emphasis on individual craftsmanship.

These artists often used enamel for its color rather than as an imitation of precious stones.

The enamel itself became the star.

Why Collectors Love Antique Enamel

For collectors, enamel offers something that many other forms of jewelry cannot.

It can preserve the hand of the artist.

Two apparently similar enamel pieces may have subtle differences in color, texture, or brushwork that reveal their handmade nature.

Tiny imperfections can sometimes actually be evidence that a piece was individually crafted rather than mass produced.

This is especially true of painted enamel and early twentieth-century artistic jewelry.

A beautiful enamel jewel can therefore be appreciated not only for its design but for the technical achievement required to create it.

Caring for Enamel Jewelry

The same qualities that make enamel beautiful also mean that it deserves care.

Enamel is glass, and glass can chip.

A hard knock against a countertop or another piece of jewelry can damage an exposed enamel surface. Antique enamel can be particularly vulnerable if it has already developed tiny cracks or areas of loss.

For this reason, enamel jewelry should generally be stored separately from harder pieces and protected from impacts.

It is also wise to avoid exposing antique enamel to unnecessary heat or harsh chemicals.

And when an antique enamel piece has been damaged, repairs should be undertaken by someone experienced with historic enameling. Recreating the original color and firing conditions can be extraordinarily difficult.

More Than Just Color

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about enamel is that it occupies an unusual place in jewelry.

It isn't a gemstone.

It isn't simply paint.

It isn't quite glasswork or metalwork.

It is a little of all of them.

A jeweler creates the metal framework.

An enameller creates the color.

The kiln transforms the glass.

And the final result depends on all three.

That is why exceptional enamel jewelry can be so valuable. The material itself may be inexpensive compared with a diamond or ruby, but the finished jewel represents an extraordinary amount of skill, patience, and risk.

The next time you see a jewel covered in brilliant blue, translucent green, or fiery red enamel, look a little closer.

Behind that beautiful surface is powdered glass, a hot kiln, a very steady hand—and quite possibly several centuries of tradition.
